Home from LA/Anaheim … Texts of talks given there
July 17, 2009
After another red-eye (I'm surviving quite a few of them this summer ...), I'm back in Florida, savoring memories of a really wonderful time with the Episcopal Convention. I haven't been keeping up with the news reports, but I can share my clear impression: there is a good and prayerful spirit among the bishops and delegates ... and a sense that a corner is being turned in this community of faith. The texts of my two talks are included after the jump, for any who are interested.

Q & R from Ireland … on spiritual friendship
July 16, 2009
Here's the question:
just a 'wee' note from ireland to thank you so much for coming to share with us @rehab.........my husband and i have been in youth ministry for over ten years and recently took a fresh direction in our adventure with Jesus..anyway just wanted to say thank you..what you said really spoke to us and encouraged us ...it was so inspiring and we look forward to hearing you again in the future..
Just a quick note: saw you at Summer Madness and was definitely intrigued by your points of view. I like being perplexed by different opinions, it's good for my soul.
We have a group of guys who meet in a pub where we live in Hillsborough (County Down, south of Belfast - you're welcome any time!), on a monthly basis, and it's a sort of informal arrangement that a few of us hope will gently evolve into some kind of accountability group. Nothing written down per se, just an informal collection of people who have the opportunity - whether we take it or not - to ask difficult and challenging questions of themselves and one another in a space and time away from all that preoccupies us.
I was wondering, therefore, if you wouldn't mind dropping me a quick line with the 'soul friendship' brief questions you had at the seminar you took on the friends from your past and present, or pointing me in the direction of whichever book of yours talks about it:I forgot to bring a notebook and am not technologically savvy enough to remember to put such things in my phone! ... Hope you returned safely and thanks once again for your gracious answers to some good questions.

A new kind of Amish …
July 15, 2009
This amazing, beautiful, and sensitive Australian documentary shows fascinating dynamics playing out among some Amish folk ... The ending brought back memories for me, as we have a son who is a cancer survivor, and he was diagnosed with leukemia at about the same age as the beautiful little Amish girl Marie.

An old song given new life …
July 15, 2009
I recently received this encouraging note from a Catholic teacher in Taiwan ...
I wanted to thank you for your song Immanuel from Learning to Love. Attached is a PPT I created based on this song in a presentation I gave on the feast of Corpus Christi for a youth group in a Catholic church in Taiwan where I teach and serve. I used Immanuel as I wanted to express the most important point of this feast is the message of a the sacrament of Eucharist as a means to put us with God again.
As I gave the presentation I thought that at the writing and recording of this song so many years ago, I can't imagine that Brian could have foreseen that one day an American teaching in Taiwan would translate it into Chinese to share with a youth group there.
As a teacher I don't usually get the see the fruits of what seeds I intent to sow. I wanted to let Brian know that one seed of his song Immanuel bore fruit in Taiwan yesterday. Thank you.
Thanks for this encouragement!
Here's the powerpoint, but unfortunately, I can't get the Chinese characters to translate ...
